Ooredoo has unveiled a sweeping digital transformation initiative aimed at repositioning the telecom operator as an artificial intelligence-powered enterprise, in partnership with Microsoft.

The Strategic Digital & AI Transformation Programme marks a significant step in Ooredoo’s long-term strategy to modernise its operations, enhance customer experience, and build a future-ready digital infrastructure.

The initiative builds on an existing relationship between both companies and is designed to scale AI adoption across Ooredoo’s business, from network management to enterprise services.

“Supported by a strategic collaboration with Microsoft, this programme aims to deliver more personalised and proactive customer experiences, empower enterprises with advanced digital capabilities that strengthen competitiveness, and contribute to the development of a resilient digital ecosystem,” said Sheikh Ali bin Jabor bin Mohammad Al Thani, CEO, Ooredoo Qatar.

Building an AI-First Telecom Operator

At the heart of the programme is a shift in how telecom companies operate.

Traditionally focused on connectivity, operators are now under pressure to evolve into digital service providers. This requires not just infrastructure upgrades, but a fundamental rethinking of operations, customer engagement, and service delivery.

For Ooredoo, the transformation centres on deploying sovereign and hybrid cloud systems, enabling AI capabilities, and building a scalable digital foundation that can support advanced services.

Sheikh Ali bin Jabor bin Mohammad Al Thani described the move as more than a technology upgrade.

“This programme represents a strategic transformation focused on building a scalable digital foundation designed to deliver innovative digital solutions and services that meet evolving market demands,” he said.

Microsoft’s Role in Scaling AI Adoption

The collaboration brings together Ooredoo’s telecom infrastructure with Microsoft’s expertise in cloud computing, data platforms, and artificial intelligence.

“Ooredoo’s transformation into an AI-powered organisation is a strong example of how technology can unlock new opportunities across industries. Through this collaboration, we are bringing together cloud, data, and AI to help accelerate innovation at scale, while supporting the development of a more resilient and dynamic digital ecosystem,” said Ahmad El Dandachi, GM, Microsoft Qatar.

The partnership will focus on building a robust AI and cloud architecture capable of supporting telecom operations, customer engagement systems, and enterprise solutions.

This includes deploying AI tools for predictive network optimisation, intelligent automation, and personalised customer experiences.

From Network Operations to Customer Experience

The programme is expected to impact Ooredoo’s entire value chain.

On the operational side, AI will be used to enhance network performance through predictive analytics and automated optimisation. This could improve service reliability while reducing operational costs.

On the customer side, the focus will shift towards more personalised and proactive engagement, leveraging AI to anticipate user needs and deliver tailored services.

For enterprise clients, the transformation opens up new possibilities in AI-powered solutions, enabling businesses to access advanced digital capabilities through Ooredoo’s platform.

A Long-Term Co-Innovation Model

Beyond immediate deployment, the agreement establishes a co-innovation framework between the two companies.

This model is designed to support the development of scalable AI use cases and repeatable innovation processes, allowing both organisations to continuously evolve their offerings.

It also positions Ooredoo to tap into Microsoft’s broader ecosystem, including its cloud infrastructure and AI development tools, to accelerate time-to-market for new services.

The transformation programme is closely aligned with Qatar’s national digital strategy.

Qatar National Vision 2030 places strong emphasis on economic diversification, digital innovation, and the development of a knowledge-based economy. Telecom operators are expected to play a central role in enabling this transition.

By investing in AI and cloud infrastructure, Ooredoo is positioning itself as a key enabler of the country’s digital ambitions.

The initiative also reflects a wider regional trend, as Middle Eastern telecom companies increasingly invest in AI to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving global market.

Implications Beyond Qatar

While the programme is focused on Qatar, its implications extend across Ooredoo’s broader footprint in the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia.

Telecom operators in emerging markets face similar challenges, including rising data demand, evolving customer expectations, and the need to diversify revenue streams.

AI-driven transformation offers a pathway to address these pressures, enabling operators to move beyond connectivity into higher-value digital services.

For markets such as Africa, where Ooredoo has previously explored opportunities, the model could provide a blueprint for leveraging AI to expand access, improve service delivery, and support digital inclusion.

Ooredoo’s partnership with Microsoft underscores a broader shift in the telecom industry. Ooredoo is betting that this transformation will place it at the forefront of that future.

Talking Points

It is significant that Ooredoo is moving beyond traditional telecom operations to position itself as an AI-powered organisation, reflecting a broader shift across the global telecom industry.

The launch of its Strategic Digital & AI Transformation Programme, in collaboration with Microsoft, highlights how partnerships between telecom operators and technology firms are becoming critical to driving large-scale digital transformation.

At Techparley, we see this as a strategic move that goes beyond infrastructure upgrades, focusing instead on building a scalable digital foundation that can support advanced services, improve customer experience, and unlock new revenue streams.

The emphasis on sovereign and hybrid cloud capabilities is particularly relevant, especially as countries and enterprises increasingly prioritise data control, security, and regulatory compliance in their digital strategies.

The integration of AI across network operations, customer engagement, and enterprise services positions Ooredoo to operate more efficiently while delivering more personalised and proactive services.

As Ooredoo advances this strategy, we see an opportunity for it to play a larger role in shaping digital ecosystems, not just in Qatar but across emerging markets where telecom operators are central to digital access.

With the right execution and sustained collaboration, this initiative could position Ooredoo as a leading example of how telecom companies can evolve into full-scale digital and AI platforms in an increasingly data-driven world.
