A new Nigerian safety-tech startup, Live Intervals, is seeking to redefine how personal security is approached by introducing a platform that prioritises prevention over emergency response.
Founded in May by 19-year-old entrepreneur Njeze Okechukwu, Live Intervals has officially launched a personal security platform that automatically shares users’ location updates with trusted family members, creating a continuous digital trail that can prove invaluable during emergencies.
Instead of depending on users to manually trigger an SOS alert when they are already in danger, the startup is betting on automation as a more effective solution for Nigeria’s unique security realities, where incidents such as kidnappings, robberies, and unsafe transit have heightened concerns about personal safety.
By continuously updating a user’s location at regular intervals, Live Intervals aims to provide families with real-time visibility into their loved ones’ journeys while ensuring that critical information is readily available should an unexpected situation arise.
Speaking on the motivation behind the platform, Okechukwu explained that existing solutions often fall short because they require users to take action during moments of crisis.
“The current market is dominated by reactive solutions that require user input during a crisis. We found that in the Nigerian context, where transit-related safety is a daily concern, this model is often insufficient.
“We decided to automate the process to remove the burden of manual check-ins. While international apps like Life360 and bSafe dominate the global space, our focus is on refining this proactive approach specifically for the Nigerian environment.”
What is Live Intervals?
Live Intervals is a personal security platform built to enable continuous location sharing between users and their trusted family members or close contacts.
In place of requiring users to repeatedly notify loved ones about their whereabouts, the platform automates the entire process by periodically transmitting location updates to a secure family cloud.
The result is a detailed digital record of a user’s movement throughout a journey, allowing designated family members to monitor trips in real time.
Should an emergency occur, this location history provides valuable context that could help loved ones understand where the user was last seen and the route they followed before communication was interrupted.
By shifting the focus from emergency reaction to continuous monitoring, Live Intervals positions itself as a preventive safety tool rather than simply an emergency response application.
What Problem is Live Intervals Trying to Solve?
One of the biggest challenges with many existing safety applications is that they only become effective after a crisis has already begun. Most traditional personal safety apps require users to manually activate an emergency button or send an SOS alert when they are under threat.
However, in real-life emergencies, victims may not always have the opportunity to unlock their phones or trigger an alert.
Recognising this limitation, Live Intervals was developed to eliminate the need for manual check-ins by allowing location updates to happen automatically.
According to the startup, this approach is particularly relevant in Nigeria, where many people undertake long-distance journeys or commute daily amid growing security concerns.
“The current market is dominated by reactive solutions that require user input during a crisis… We decided to automate the process to remove the burden of manual check-ins,” Okechukwu noted.
This proactive model ensures that trusted contacts already possess recent location information before an incident occurs, potentially improving response efforts if a user goes missing or encounters danger.
How Does the Platform Work?
At the heart of Live Intervals is what the company describes as an “automated interval system.” Rather than depending on users to remember to send updates, the system automatically shares location information at predetermined intervals.
These updates are securely transmitted to a protected family cloud, where authorised relatives or trusted contacts can monitor the user’s movement in real time.
As each new location is recorded, the platform creates what can best be described as a digital breadcrumb trail, a continuous history of the user’s journey from departure to destination.
This means that if a user’s journey is interrupted unexpectedly or communication suddenly stops, family members already have access to detailed information about the person’s last known location and travel route, potentially providing crucial context during emergencies.
The automation also removes the inconvenience of repeatedly texting or calling loved ones simply to confirm safe arrival at various points along a journey.
Built for the Nigerian Security Environment
Although location-sharing technology already exists internationally through platforms such as Life360 and bSafe, Live Intervals is specifically designed with Nigeria’s security realities in mind.
The founder believes that the country’s unique transit-related safety challenges require solutions that are tailored to local circumstances rather than relying solely on models developed for other markets.
“While international apps like Life360 and bSafe dominate the global space, our focus is on refining this proactive approach specifically for the Nigerian environment,” the founder explained.
This localised focus could enable the startup to better understand user behaviour, travel patterns, and safety concerns that are unique to Nigerian communities while continuously refining its technology based on local needs.
Early Growth Shows Strong User Interest
Despite being only weeks old, Live Intervals says it has already recorded encouraging early traction among users.
According to Okechukwu, the startup has reached 320 unique device acquisitions, while achieving a 46.63 per cent store listing conversion rate, a figure he says is 17.78 per cent higher than the average within its category.
Beyond downloads, the founder also pointed to user engagement as an encouraging indicator of product acceptance.
“The response has been highly encouraging for a two-week-old product. We have reached 320 unique device acquisitions with a 46.63 per cent store listing conversion rate which is 17.78 per cent above the category peer average.
“Our engagement metrics are strong, with monthly active users already exceeding our initial ‘first opens,’ showing that our early adopters are integrating us into their daily routines.”
These figures suggest that many users are not merely installing the application out of curiosity but are actively incorporating it into their everyday lives as part of their personal safety routine.
Lean Operations with Global Ambitions
Live Intervals is currently operating as a bootstrapped startup, meaning it has been developed without external investor funding. Despite limited resources, the company says it has deliberately focused on building an efficient technology infrastructure capable of delivering accurate location tracking without incurring excessive operating costs.
According to the founder, the startup has prioritised “extreme cost-efficiency in its architecture,” allowing it to maintain high-precision tracking without the heavy overhead typically associated with location-based services.
Looking beyond Nigeria, the company also sees significant international potential for its technology.
“We are currently focused on the Nigerian market. Safety is a universal need, however, and our long-term roadmap includes scaling globally. Given our unique, proactive approach to personal security, we are confident in our ability to compete in the broader safety-tech space,” Okechukwu said.
While the startup’s immediate priority remains serving Nigerian users, its long-term vision reflects growing confidence that locally developed safety innovations can compete on the global stage by addressing one of humanity’s most universal needs, personal security.
Talking Points
Live Intervals presents a promising evolution in Nigeria’s emerging safety-tech ecosystem by shifting personal security from a reactive to a preventive model.
Its automated location-sharing system addresses a genuine gap in conventional safety applications, particularly in a country where transit-related security concerns are prevalent and users may be unable to activate emergency alerts during a crisis.
The startup’s early traction, reflected in its download conversion and user engagement metrics, suggests strong market interest despite its recent launch.
Equally noteworthy is its emphasis on cost-efficient infrastructure, which could support sustainable growth while maintaining reliable location tracking.
However, the platform’s long-term success will depend on how effectively it balances continuous location monitoring with robust data privacy, user consent, and cybersecurity safeguards.
If Live Intervals can sustain user trust, scale its technology responsibly, and continue refining its solution for local realities, it has the potential to become a significant Nigerian innovation with relevance in the global personal safety technology market.
