Egyptian health technology startup, Reme-D, has secured $1.45 million in a Pre-Series A funding round to accelerate the production of affordable molecular diagnostic tests, expand its footprint across Africa, and develop new diagnostic solutions for genetic diseases and cancer.
The funding round was led by Anara Impact Capital, with participation from the Global Innovation Fund (GIF), Africa Health Ventures, and other investors.
The investment marks a significant milestone for the Cairo-based startup as it seeks to address one of Africa’s most persistent healthcare challenges, limited access to reliable and affordable disease diagnosis.
By increasing its manufacturing capacity and broadening its product portfolio, Reme-D aims to make advanced molecular testing more accessible in underserved communities where healthcare infrastructure is often limited.
The company says its long-term vision is to ensure that cost and geography no longer prevent patients from receiving life-saving diagnostic services.
What is Reme-D and what does it do?
Founded in 2023 by Salma Tammam, Reme-D is an Egyptian healthtech company that develops and manufactures molecular diagnostic solutions designed to detect infectious diseases quickly and accurately.
Its portfolio currently includes diagnostic tests for tuberculosis (TB), HIV, hepatitis, and Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a virus that is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer among women.
Unlike many imported diagnostic products that require strict cold-chain storage, Reme-D focuses on producing temperature-resilient diagnostic tests that can be transported and stored even in regions with unreliable electricity or limited healthcare infrastructure.
This makes its products particularly valuable for remote communities across Africa and other underserved markets.
According to the company, its mission is centered on making advanced diagnostics “accurate, fast, affordable, and temperature-resilient,” ensuring that quality healthcare reaches populations that have historically lacked access to modern laboratory testing.
Since its establishment, the startup has rapidly expanded its operations. It has already developed and commercialised 30 diagnostic products from its Cairo manufacturing facility and supplied more than 550,000 diagnostic tests across Egypt, Kenya, and Sudan.
Its products are currently used by public and private laboratories, hospitals, and research institutions, while its technologies have also featured in international scientific publications. The company has further strengthened its innovation credentials by filing a United States patent application covering its proprietary technology.
What to know about the funding
The latest $1.45 million Pre-Series A funding round represents another major vote of confidence in Reme-D’s vision and technology.
The investment was led by Anara Impact Capital, alongside participation from the Global Innovation Fund, Africa Health Ventures, and other strategic investors committed to expanding access to healthcare innovation across emerging markets.
The latest funding follows another investment milestone for the company. In April, Reme-D secured $500,000 from the Global Innovation Fund to support the expansion of its molecular diagnostics solutions, underscoring growing investor confidence in its business model and long-term impact.
Commenting on the investment, Mohamed Hussain, Principal at Anara Impact Capital, praised the company’s ability to combine scientific innovation with practical healthcare solutions.
“We were impressed by Salma and the Reme-D team’s ability to combine deep scientific expertise with a clear understanding of the realities of delivering diagnostics in underserved markets.
“Reme-D has already demonstrated that high-quality molecular diagnostics can be developed and manufactured locally, and we are excited to support the team as they scale their impact across MEA and beyond.”
The remarks highlight a broader shift among impact investors who increasingly see African startups as capable of delivering globally competitive healthcare technologies while solving local challenges.
How the funding will be used
The newly secured capital will enable Reme-D to significantly expand both its production capacity and product offerings.
One of the company’s immediate priorities is relocating into a 1,500-square-metre manufacturing facility equipped with upgraded production systems that will increase manufacturing capacity by tenfold.
This expansion is expected to enable the startup to meet growing demand across African markets while maintaining high quality standards.
Beyond scaling production, the company also plans to broaden its diagnostic portfolio by introducing tests for genetic diseases and various forms of cancer.
It will continue investing in technologies that make diagnostic products more resistant to heat and easier to transport into remote communities where refrigeration and advanced laboratory infrastructure remain scarce.
The funding will also strengthen Reme-D’s regulatory capabilities, improve quality assurance systems, and support its expansion into additional African markets.
Why this is important
Access to timely and accurate disease diagnosis remains one of Africa’s biggest healthcare challenges. Millions of patients across the continent continue to face delays in testing because advanced diagnostic technologies are often expensive, imported, or unavailable outside major urban centres.
By manufacturing affordable, locally developed molecular diagnostic tests that can withstand harsh environmental conditions, Reme-D is helping bridge a critical healthcare gap. Its approach reduces dependence on imported diagnostics while strengthening Africa’s capacity to produce essential medical technologies locally.
Founder and Chief Executive Officer Salma Tammam said the company’s mission goes beyond building a successful business.
“Success means that patients in Africa and the Global South are no longer blocked from life-altering disease diagnosis by cost or availability of an advanced molecular test in their area. This is our ultimate goal.”
She further emphasized the broader significance of the company’s achievements, adding:
“We take particular pride in demonstrating what African science and African women can bring to the business world and global community, and we are grateful to be supported by a group of remarkable investors who share our desire for real-world positive impact.”
As governments and healthcare providers across Africa continue to prioritise disease surveillance, early diagnosis, and local pharmaceutical manufacturing, Reme-D’s growth reflects the rising role of African innovation in strengthening public health systems.
With fresh capital, expanded manufacturing capacity, and ambitious plans to develop next-generation diagnostic tools, the Egyptian startup is positioning itself as one of the continent’s emerging leaders in molecular diagnostics while contributing to more equitable healthcare access across underserved communities.
