Egypt-based Beltone Venture Capital has recorded a major investment success after completing a partial exit from proptech startup BirdNest, generating a 3.5x return on invested capital and an impressive 80% internal rate of return (IRR) over a two-year holding period.
The transaction covered both Beltone Venture Capital’s direct investment and its indirect stake through its joint fund with UAE-based Citadel International Holdings, while the firm retained a strategic ownership position in BirdNest to support its next phase of growth.
The milestone highlights the growing maturity of Egypt’s startup ecosystem, demonstrating how venture capital firms can create substantial value by backing high-growth technology companies while continuing to nurture their long-term expansion.
What is Happening?
Beltone Venture Capital’s partial exit marks a significant milestone for both the investment firm and BirdNest, underscoring the startup’s remarkable growth trajectory since receiving funding.
Instead of selling its entire ownership, Beltone chose to dispose of only part of its stake, allowing it to realise substantial returns while maintaining confidence in BirdNest’s future prospects.
The transaction included Beltone’s direct investment alongside its indirect holding through a joint investment fund established with UAE-based Citadel International Holdings.
By retaining a strategic stake, Beltone has signalled its intention to remain actively involved in BirdNest’s journey, providing continued financial backing and strategic support as the hospitality technology company scales its operations across existing and new markets.
Beltone Highlights Disciplined Investment Strategy
Ali Mokhtar, CEO and Managing Partner of Beltone Venture Capital, described the successful transaction as validation of the firm’s disciplined investment philosophy, which combines careful investment selection with active portfolio management and timely capital realisation.
According to him, the partial exit enables Beltone to reward its investors while preserving the opportunity to benefit from BirdNest’s future growth.
“This outcome reflects the discipline of Beltone Venture Capital’s investment approach from rigorous underwriting and active portfolio support to disciplined capital realization,” Mokhtar said.
He added, “This partial exit enables us to return capital to our investors while retaining a strategic stake in BirdNest. We remain committed to supporting the company’s next phase of growth through Beltone’s financial ecosystem and capabilities.”
His remarks reinforce the firm’s confidence in BirdNest’s long-term business potential.
BirdNest’s Rapid Growth Drives Investor Confidence
BirdNest’s strong operational performance played a central role in making the investment exit possible.
Founded in 2019 by Mostafa Elnahawy, the Egyptian startup has built a technology-powered marketplace that connects travellers with carefully curated boutique hotels and holiday homes focused on art, wellness, and authentic local experiences.
Over the past two years, the company has experienced exceptional business growth, significantly increasing its financial value.
Commenting on the achievement, Elnahawy said, “This milestone reflects the strength of BirdNest’s business model and the dedication of our team, partners, and investors.”
He further revealed that the company had achieved “more than 10x growth in U.S. dollar revenue while reaching profitability,” demonstrating that BirdNest is not only expanding rapidly but also generating sustainable earnings.
Why the Partial Exit Matters for Egypt’s Startup Ecosystem
Beyond the financial gains realised by Beltone Venture Capital, the transaction sends a positive signal about the strength and maturity of Egypt’s technology startup ecosystem.
Successful venture capital exits are widely regarded as important indicators of a healthy innovation market because they demonstrate that investors can generate attractive returns from supporting local startups.
Such outcomes encourage more domestic and international investors to commit capital to emerging technology businesses, creating a stronger pipeline for innovation and entrepreneurship.
At the same time, Beltone’s decision to retain a strategic stake illustrates a long-term partnership approach rather than a complete departure, ensuring BirdNest continues to benefit from the firm’s expertise, financial ecosystem, and strategic capabilities as it pursues its next phase of expansion and value creation.
