YAKUB ABDULRASHEED – Dubai-based creative technology startup Popcorn Studio AI has secured a $1 million pre-seed funding package to develop its artificial intelligence-powered filmmaking platform and accelerate international expansion.
The funding, led by Emirati entrepreneur and investor Mohammed Bin Bouta Alharsoosi, will support the company’s technology development, product expansion and growth across the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
Founded in 2026 by Egyptian entrepreneurs Shady Essam and Mohamed Hedar, Popcorn is building an integrated platform that enables filmmakers, content creators, agencies and brands to produce cinematic videos using AI tools.
The company is also promoting AI-powered storytelling through a filmmaking competition associated with the El Gouna Film Festival, featuring a $70,000 prize pool.
AI Platform Seeks to Simplify Film Production
Popcorn Studio AI is developing a platform designed to bring multiple stages of video production into a single digital workspace, reducing the need for creators to navigate separate tools for scriptwriting, character development, scene generation, voiceovers, lip-syncing and post-production.
The company is positioning its technology as an alternative to traditional production processes that often require substantial budgets, specialised equipment, physical locations and large creative teams.
Through its AI-powered workflow, users can develop concepts, generate cinematic scenes, create commercial videos and produce multilingual content.
Rather than focusing solely on making video production faster, Popcorn aims to give more people the opportunity to bring their creative ideas to life, regardless of their financial resources or technical background.
“Our ambition isn’t to replace filmmakers. It’s to remove the barriers between imagination and execution,” said Shady Essam, co-founder and chief executive officer of Popcorn Studio AI.
“We want to make it possible for anyone with a powerful story to create something extraordinary, regardless of their budget, location, or technical background.”
The platform’s approach reflects a broader shift in the creative industry, where generative AI is increasingly being used to assist with content development, visual production and editing.
However, Popcorn’s long-term success will depend on its ability to deliver reliable, high-quality outputs and attract creators and businesses willing to adopt its technology.
Arabic-Language Capabilities and Regional Expansion
A major feature of Popcorn Studio AI’s strategy is its emphasis on Arabic-language filmmaking, including support for regional dialects and native Arabic lip-syncing capabilities.
The focus addresses a challenge for creators seeking to produce culturally relevant content for Arabic-speaking audiences, particularly when characters need to speak naturally in specific dialects rather than formal Arabic or English.
By combining AI video production tools with language and cultural considerations, the startup hopes to serve filmmakers, advertising agencies and brands looking to create content for audiences across the Middle East and North Africa.
The $1 million funding package will support the company’s expansion across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, alongside efforts to establish international partnerships and broaden its product offering.
For investor Mohammed Bin Bouta Alharsoosi, the opportunity lies in the region’s growing content market and the potential for AI to transform how creative work is produced.
“POPCORN Studio AI represents exactly the kind of bold, regionally rooted technology I look for,” Alharsoosi said, adding that the founders have “the vision, the execution capability, and a product that’s already resonating.”
He said he was proud to support the startup at an early stage as it pursues its ambitions in AI-driven content creation.
El Gouna Film Festival Competition to Support Emerging Filmmakers
Beyond its technology and expansion plans, Popcorn Studio AI is seeking to encourage the adoption of AI-powered filmmaking through a competition associated with the El Gouna Film Festival, with a $70,000 prize pool.
The initiative is intended to support emerging filmmakers and provide opportunities for creative experimentation with artificial intelligence, potentially allowing participants to develop cinematic projects without the production resources traditionally required for filmmaking.
The competition also aligns with Popcorn’s broader ambition to make storytelling more accessible and encourage creators to explore new approaches to film production.
The announcement comes as AI tools continue to reshape the economics of video creation, enabling smaller teams to undertake projects that previously demanded substantial equipment, production crews and budgets.
However, the technology’s growing use also raises questions about creative ownership, the authenticity of AI-generated performances and the future of traditional filmmaking roles.
For Popcorn, the immediate challenge is to translate its vision into a platform that delivers practical value to creators while building a sustainable business across regional and international markets.
