Cairo-based fintech startup Blnk has secured a combined US$37.1 million in fresh funding to accelerate its mission of expanding access to credit for millions of consumers who have traditionally been excluded from formal financial services.

The funding package comprises US$12.5 million in Series A equity financing and US$24.6 million in local debt facilities, positioning the company for its next phase of growth as it seeks to deepen financial inclusion across Egypt and potentially beyond.

The latest investment comes as Blnk continues to record remarkable growth in the country’s consumer finance sector, having already onboarded more than one million customers and built a loan portfolio exceeding EGP1 billion (US$19.25 million).

With the new capital, the company plans to broaden access to financing, particularly for women and underbanked populations, while expanding the range of products and services available through its platform.

What is Blnk and What Does It Do?

Founded in 2021, Blnk is an artificial intelligence-enabled digital consumer finance platform focused on making credit more accessible at the point of purchase.

The company operates within the growing “buy now, pay later” and consumer financing space, providing technology solutions that enable merchants to offer financing options directly to customers when they are making purchases.

Rather than requiring consumers to navigate lengthy bank loan processes, Blnk’s platform allows businesses to onboard customers and assess their creditworthiness almost instantly.

Through its proprietary technology and AI-powered underwriting systems, customers can receive financing approvals in real time, enabling them to purchase products and services and repay the costs through structured installments.

The company’s approach addresses one of the most pressing challenges in emerging markets, limited access to formal credit. Millions of people across Egypt remain either unbanked or underbanked, often lacking access to traditional financial products despite having legitimate financing needs.

By leveraging technology to streamline lending decisions, Blnk aims to bridge this gap while helping merchants increase sales and customer reach.

How Blnk Secured the Funding

Blnk’s latest financing round reflects strong investor confidence from both regional and international stakeholders.

The US$12.5 million Series A equity round was led by Algebra Ventures, one of Egypt’s leading venture capital firms. The round also attracted participation from SANAD Fund for MSME, Endeavor Catalyst, and Emirates International Investment Company (EIIC), the Abu Dhabi-based investor that previously backed the company’s seed funding round.

Alongside the equity investment, Blnk secured US$24.6 million in debt financing from a consortium of financial institutions. Major contributors included Suez Canal Bank, Bank Albaraka, and National Bank of Egypt, alongside non-bank financial institutions such as Corplease, Globalcorp, and BM Lease.

The dual funding structure provides Blnk with both growth capital and lending capacity. While the equity investment strengthens the company’s balance sheet and supports strategic expansion initiatives, the debt facilities provide the resources necessary to finance a larger volume of consumer loans.

The funding announcement underscores increasing confidence among investors and financial institutions in technology-driven lending models that can responsibly extend credit to underserved populations.

Blnk’s Milestones So Far

Since raising its seed funding round in November 2022, Blnk has experienced rapid expansion, establishing itself as one of Egypt’s most prominent consumer finance platforms.

According to the company, it has successfully onboarded more than one million customers while growing its loan portfolio beyond EGP1 billion.

These achievements demonstrate not only strong market demand for alternative financing solutions but also growing trust among consumers and merchants using the platform.

The company’s growth trajectory highlights the increasing role fintech firms are playing in addressing financial inclusion challenges across emerging economies.

By digitizing credit assessment and simplifying access to financing, Blnk has managed to scale rapidly while serving segments of the population that have historically faced barriers to accessing traditional financial services.

Its ability to grow its customer base while managing a substantial loan portfolio has also attracted investor attention, reinforcing confidence in the sustainability of its business model.

How Does Blnk Plan to Use the Money?

The newly secured funding will be directed toward expanding Blnk’s consumer finance operations across Egypt, with a particular emphasis on reaching underserved communities.

The company intends to increase access to financing for women and underbanked consumers by offering more flexible loan options and financing a broader range of products and services.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts across the Middle East and North Africa to improve financial inclusion and reduce barriers to economic participation.

Commenting on the funding milestone, Blnk Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder Amr Sultan expressed optimism about the company’s future trajectory.

“We’re proud to have secured the backing of some of the most respected investors in the region and beyond for this round of funding. Their continued belief in our mission is a powerful endorsement of what we’re building at Blnk,” Sultan said.

He added that the fresh capital would help the company strengthen its market position and profitability.

“This new round of funding positions us to strengthen our profitability, expanding our reach, diversifying our offerings and doubling down on our commitment to unlocking financial access for millions of consumers in Egypt and beyond,” he said.

The company believes that by expanding its financing capabilities and product offerings, it can further democratize access to credit while supporting consumer spending and economic growth.

Why is This Important Beyond Egypt?

Blnk’s latest funding round carries significance beyond the Egyptian market because it reflects a broader transformation taking place across emerging economies, where fintech companies are increasingly filling gaps left by traditional banking institutions.

Across Africa and the Middle East, millions of consumers remain excluded from formal financial systems despite growing demand for credit, savings, and digital payment solutions.

Fintech platforms like Blnk are leveraging technology, artificial intelligence, and alternative credit assessment models to provide services that conventional lenders often struggle to deliver efficiently.

The investment also highlights growing investor appetite for financial inclusion-focused startups capable of combining commercial success with social impact. By helping underserved populations access financing, these companies contribute not only to financial sector growth but also to broader economic development.

Karim Hussein, Managing Partner at Algebra Ventures, emphasized the company’s unique position within Egypt’s consumer finance ecosystem.

“Blnk’s ability to serve the underserved, particularly unbanked and underbanked consumers, while maintaining disciplined credit management, positions them as a category-defining player in Egypt’s consumer finance space,” Hussein said.

He further noted that investors are excited about supporting Blnk’s next phase of expansion as it scales into new sectors and markets.

Talking Points

Blnk’s growth story is impressive, but it also raises important questions about the sustainability of rapid consumer lending in emerging markets.

On one hand, the company is addressing a genuine gap by extending credit to unbanked and underbanked populations, using technology to simplify access to financing and helping merchants increase sales.

Its ability to onboard over one million customers and build a sizable loan portfolio within a few years signals strong market demand and operational execution.

However, consumer finance is a high-risk business where aggressive expansion can quickly expose lenders to rising defaults, especially during economic downturns, inflationary pressures, or declining household incomes.

While Blnk highlights AI-driven underwriting and disciplined credit management, the real test will be whether it can maintain loan quality as it scales. The company’s increasing reliance on debt facilities also means profitability and risk management must remain top priorities.

Ultimately, Blnk appears to be a promising financial inclusion champion, but its long-term success will depend not on customer growth alone, but on balancing expansion with prudent lending and sustainable profitability.
