LG Electronics is strengthening its technical and after-sales service capabilities across East Africa as increasingly sophisticated consumer appliances raise the skills required to install, diagnose and repair modern products.
The South Korean electronics manufacturer brought together service professionals from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Somalia, Zambia and South Sudan in Nairobi for the LG Electronics East Africa Service Skill Olympiad.
This is a competition designed to assess technical expertise and promote common service standards across its markets.
The initiative reflects a growing challenge for electronics companies operating in Africa, and this is maintaining customer satisfaction requires more than selling reliable products.
As appliances become increasingly connected and technologically advanced, companies must also ensure that technicians possess the practical skills needed to support customers throughout the lifespan of their purchases.
The LG’s East African Service Skill Olympiad
The LG Electronics East Africa Service Skill Olympiad brought technicians from seven African countries together to demonstrate their abilities in appliance installation, fault diagnosis, repairs, technical problem-solving and customer service.
The competition assessed participants across four categories: Media Solution, Home Solution, Residential Air Conditioner and Moment of Truth, which focuses on the customer’s initial installation experience.
The programme provides LG with an opportunity to assess technicians’ performance, recognise outstanding professionals and identify areas requiring further training.
Top-performing participants received certificates, trophies, medals and LG products, including refrigerators, televisions and washing machines.
However, the initiative extends beyond rewarding individual achievements. By bringing technicians from different markets together, LG can benchmark service capabilities and encourage more consistent standards across its regional operations.
The company’s Service Olympics programme began in 2002 and expanded internationally in 2018 to incorporate customer interaction and consultation alongside technical assessments.
Why After-Sales Service Matters to LG’s Business
For consumer electronics manufacturers, the customer relationship does not end when a product is purchased. Incorrect installation, ineffective repairs and poor communication can damage a brand’s reputation, even when the original product performs as expected.
Conversely, responsive technical support can strengthen customer confidence, encourage repeat purchases and improve relationships with retailers and distributors.
“The customer experience extends beyond purchasing a product. Skilled technicians and reliable after-sales support are central to building customer trust and loyalty,” said Rakesh Singh, CEO at Opalnet.
The emphasis on customer experience highlights the commercial importance of maintaining an effective service network. Customers who struggle to obtain repairs or technical assistance may become reluctant to purchase from the same brand again.
For LG, developing technicians’ skills is therefore both a service-quality measure and a business strategy aimed at protecting customer relationships, strengthening brand loyalty and sustaining long-term growth across East Africa.
How Increasingly Sophisticated Appliances Are Changing Technical Skills
Advances in electronics, connectivity, automation and energy efficiency are changing the knowledge required to service modern household appliances.
Smart televisions, connected air conditioners and electronically controlled washing machines can require technicians to understand digital diagnostics, electronic components, sensors and software-related problems in addition to conventional mechanical repairs.
A technician who lacks these capabilities may misdiagnose a fault, replace functioning components or struggle to resolve a customer’s complaint.
LG’s competition addresses this challenge by assessing practical technical problem-solving alongside installation and customer consultation. The company is also operating within a broader skills-development environment.
Kenya’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training sector recorded 193,156 graduates across registered institutions in 2022, according to the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection’s Skills Training and Labour Institutions Survey 2025.
However, the availability of graduates does not necessarily guarantee that their skills match the specialised requirements of modern electronics manufacturers.
LG’s Investment in People and Long-Term Service Quality
LG’s approach reflects the growing importance of aligning workforce development with changing industry requirements.
While technical and vocational institutions provide foundational training, manufacturers can help bridge the gap between general qualifications and the specialised knowledge required to service their products.
Competitions such as the Service Olympics offer a platform for evaluating practical competence and identifying opportunities for further professional development.
“Investing in our people and strengthening their technical capabilities are important to our long-term business success,” said Sisung Jin, Chief Financial Officer at LG Electronics East Africa.
The long-term value of this investment will depend on whether the competition translates into sustained improvements in service delivery.
Continuous training, consistent technical standards, access to spare parts and dependable customer support remain essential to building an effective after-sales network.
Although the competition recognises individual excellence, its wider significance lies in LG’s efforts to improve how its products are supported across multiple markets.
Ultimately, the initiative’s success will be measured not only by the technicians who win awards but also by whether customers receive more reliable installation, maintenance and repair services.
