The London Internet Exchange (LINX), a leading Internet Exchange Point (IXP) operator based in the UK, has announced a strategic partnership with the Internet Society Ghana Chapter (ISOC Ghana) to enhance internet and digital connectivity development in the region.
This collaboration coincides with the launch of LINX Accra, a new hub designed to improve internet performance and reduce data transit costs for networks operating in Ghana and neighboring countries.
According to Nurani Nimpuno, Head of Global Engagement at LINX, the company’s arrival in Ghana presents an opportunity to reinforce its mission.
“We are excited to work alongside the Internet Society Ghana Chapter to support capacity building in Ghana. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to building a more robust and accessible internet for all,” said Nurani Nimpuno.
Strengthening Ghana’s Internet Ecosystem
The Internet Society Ghana Chapter is a chartered branch of the global Internet Society (ISOC).
According to Maud Adjeley Ashont Elliot, President of the ISOC, the partnership aims to build on the existing, vibrant internet community in Ghana.
“This partnership with LINX is a timely and welcome development as it brings renewed energy to our mission and opens up new avenues for collaboration, learning and impact,” Maud Adjeley Ashont Elliot said.
“We welcome the arrival of LINX into Ghana and look forward to a long-term partnership for the good of the local internet,” he added.
A Game-Changer for West Africa
This new development is expected to lead West Africa’s internet infrastructure development, according to tech policy experts.
Experts further note that improved interconnection will translate into better online experiences for end-users, faster and stable browsing, and reduced downtime.
Talking Points
Imagine a 29-year-old freelance web developer based in Kumasi who has to deal with unreliable internet connectivity and speed.
From missed video calls with overseas clients to slow file uploads, poor connectivity will likely jeopardise her efforts and contract.
But with the launch of LINX Accra, and its partnership with the Internet Society Ghana Chapter, that reality is beginning to shift.
In addition, the impact of this digital connectivity upgrade should reach beyond tech workers to include small business owners, students, content creators, amongst others.
