South Africans are increasingly turning to tokenised stocks as a gateway to global investing, with new data from digital assets platform, Luno showing growing demand for fractional access to some of the world’s largest companies and investment funds.
The company revealed that more than 50,000 customers have invested in xStocks since the product launched in August 2025, highlighting a rising appetite among local investors seeking exposure to US equities without the traditional barriers associated with offshore investing.
xStocks are digital representations of publicly traded US shares and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), allowing investors to gain exposure to global markets through a simplified, mobile-first investment experience.
“xStocks customers hold a combined R200 million in tokenised equity assets on Luno. Around 15% of these investors are entirely new to Luno and came for tokenised stocks,” said Christo de Wit, Country Manager for South Africa, Luno.
Technology Stocks Lead Investor Demand
According to Luno, Tesla emerged as the most popular tokenised stock by trading volume, followed by Gold ETFs, Nvidia, MicroStrategy and the S&P 500 ETF.
The mix of investments offers a revealing snapshot of investor sentiment.
Technology-focused companies such as Tesla and Nvidia continue to attract attention due to their leadership positions in electric vehicles and artificial intelligence respectively.
Meanwhile, growing allocations to gold-backed ETFs suggest investors are also seeking protection against inflation, currency volatility and broader macroeconomic risks.
The popularity of the S&P 500 ETF further indicates a growing understanding among retail investors of diversified, long-term wealth-building strategies through broad market exposure.
New Investors Entering Global Markets
Luno says tokenised stocks are not only attracting existing users but are also bringing entirely new investors onto the platform.
The figures suggest that tokenised investing may be helping to bridge the gap between traditional investing and digital asset adoption, creating a new entry point for consumers who may not have previously considered investing through fintech platforms.
Beyond customer acquisition, the data points to sustained engagement among investors.
According to Luno, the average xStocks user made an initial investment of approximately R1,500 and has since grown their holdings to an average portfolio value of R6,600 spread across nearly three different investment positions.
For industry observers, this pattern is significant. Rather than demonstrating speculative behaviour commonly associated with emerging asset classes, the data suggests users are gradually building diversified portfolios and increasing their exposure over time.
The trend may indicate growing investor confidence in tokenised assets as a legitimate wealth-building tool rather than merely a trading product.
Young Investors Driving Adoption
Luno’s data also reveals that tokenised stock adoption is being led by younger investors.
Nearly half of all xStocks users are aged 34 years or younger, underscoring the growing influence of digitally native consumers on South Africa’s investment landscape.
Men account for 68 per cent of users, suggesting stronger adoption among demographics already familiar with cryptocurrency and digital asset investing.
The geographic distribution mirrors broader fintech adoption trends across the country. Gauteng accounts for 42 per cent of users, followed by the Western Cape at 25 per cent and KwaZulu-Natal at 13 per cent.
Analysts say these regions continue to lead digital financial services adoption due to higher levels of urbanisation, connectivity and access to financial products.
Blending Crypto and Traditional Investing
One of the most notable findings from Luno’s data is the convergence between cryptocurrency investing and traditional equity ownership.
The company reports that approximately 86 per cent of xStocks investors also hold cryptocurrencies on the platform.
This suggests a growing willingness among investors to combine digital assets with conventional investment products as part of broader portfolio strategies.
Luno currently manages more than R30 billion in cryptocurrency assets on behalf of South African customers, while holdings in tokenised equities have already reached R200 million less than a year after launch.
The overlap highlights how investment behaviour is evolving, with consumers increasingly viewing cryptocurrencies, tokenised stocks and ETFs as complementary rather than competing asset classes.
Breaking Down Barriers to Global Investing
For decades, access to international stock markets has been constrained by foreign exchange costs, regulatory requirements, minimum investment thresholds and complex brokerage processes.
Luno believes tokenised stocks are helping remove many of these barriers by enabling users to invest directly in global companies using South African rand through a familiar mobile interface.
The rapid adoption of tokenised stocks signals a broader evolution in how South Africans are approaching wealth creation and global market participation.
For Luno, the growth of xStocks represents more than a successful product launch. It signals changing investor expectations and growing demand for financial products that combine accessibility, flexibility and global reach.
Talking Points
It is notable that Luno’s tokenised stocks product is attracting a significant number of first-time investors, suggesting that simplified access to global markets can unlock demand that traditional investment channels have struggled to capture.
The rapid growth to 50,000 users and R200 million in tokenised equity holdings highlights how technology is lowering longstanding barriers such as foreign exchange complexity, high entry costs, and limited access to international brokerage platforms.
At Techparley, we see this as part of a broader transformation in retail investing, where digital platforms are democratising access to global assets and giving ordinary investors opportunities that were previously reserved for wealthier or more sophisticated market participants.
The popularity of Tesla, Nvidia, Gold ETFs, and the S&P 500 also reflects a maturing investor mindset. Rather than focusing solely on speculative opportunities, many users appear to be combining growth assets, diversification strategies, and macroeconomic hedges within their portfolios.
However, as tokenised investing continues to gain traction, investor education will become increasingly important. Easy access must be accompanied by a clear understanding of market risks, portfolio management, and long-term investing principles to ensure sustainable participation.
As adoption grows, there is an opportunity for platforms like Luno to play a larger role in bridging the gap between traditional finance and digital assets. With the right balance of accessibility, transparency, and investor education, tokenised stocks could become a powerful gateway to global wealth creation for African investors.
