Vehicle theft, poor fleet visibility and the growing need to protect valuable automotive assets are creating opportunities for technology-driven solutions in Nigeria.

TrackMyCarNG, a Nigerian vehicle-security and fleet-monitoring startup established in 2022, is addressing these challenges through GPS-powered vehicle tracking, remote monitoring and customer support services.

In an exclusive interview with Techparley Africa, Michael Shokunbi, founder of TrackMyCarNG, explained how personal experiences with vehicle theft inspired the business, the technology behind its operations, its approach to customer security, privacy, and its ambitions to expand beyond Lagos.

According to Shokunbi, the company’s mission is to make vehicle security “proactive rather than reactive” while giving owners greater control over their assets.

What is TrackMyCarNG and What Does It Do?

TrackMyCarNG is a Nigerian technology startup that provides GPS-based vehicle-tracking solutions to individual vehicle owners and businesses operating vehicle fleets.

Established in 2022, the company combines tracking devices, mobile connectivity and a digital monitoring platform to help customers remotely monitor their vehicles, receive movement alerts and access information about their journeys.

Its services include real-time vehicle-location monitoring, journey history, route replay and geofencing alerts, which notify customers when vehicles enter or leave designated geographical areas.

Beyond supplying and installing tracking devices, TrackMyCarNG also provides after-sales support to help customers use its technology effectively and address issues when they arise.

For individual vehicle owners, the service offers an additional layer of security and peace of mind. For businesses, particularly logistics operators, it provides greater visibility into vehicle movements and supports operational accountability.

Shokunbi explained that the company’s ambition extends beyond installing tracking equipment, noting that it wants to build a reliable vehicle-security service that helps people protect valuable assets and businesses manage their fleets more effectively.

The Problem TrackMyCarNG is Trying to Solve

The inspiration behind TrackMyCarNG came from Shokunbi’s personal experiences and an opportunity he identified while pursuing his postgraduate studies at the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

He recalled that a 2021 post on X by one Toyin Omosoto about Nigerians creating opportunities by helping people protect their vehicles sparked his interest in the business. Having experienced car theft while growing up in Lagos, he recognised the potential value of a more accessible vehicle-security solution.

However, the problem extended beyond vehicle theft. According to Shokunbi, individuals and businesses often depended on physical security measures and manual supervision, which provided limited visibility once vehicles were on the road.

For fleet operators, monitoring multiple vehicles, tracking movements and ensuring accountability could become difficult without reliable real-time information.

He explained that the company recognised that simply installing a tracking device was insufficient. Customers also needed reliable installation, mobile access, movement history, geofencing notifications and responsive customer support.

As he put it, the problem was “not just vehicle theft; it was the lack of accessible, reliable, and proactive vehicle monitoring system” that could give owners greater peace of mind and businesses better control over their fleets.

The Technology Behind TrackMyCarNG’s Operations

TrackMyCarNG’s vehicle-monitoring system relies primarily on GPS technology, mobile network connectivity and a digital tracking platform.

According to Shokunbi, the process begins with installing a tracking device inside a vehicle. The device receives signals from GPS satellites to establish the vehicle’s location.

It then uses a SIM card and mobile network connectivity to transmit the location information to the company’s tracking platform, where authorised customers can access the data through their phones or other supported devices.

This arrangement allows a vehicle owner in Lagos, for instance, to monitor a vehicle travelling in another Nigerian state without being physically present.

The platform also provides additional functionalities, including journey history, route replay and geofencing alerts, depending on the available service features.

These capabilities can help businesses monitor vehicle movements and improve fleet accountability while allowing individual owners to identify unusual movements and respond more quickly to potential security concerns.

Shokunbi emphasised that technology alone does not guarantee an effective service, stressing that proper installation and dependable after-sales support remain essential to the company’s operations.

Addressing Vehicle-Security Challenges

One of the most significant aspects of TrackMyCarNG’s service is its potential to help customers respond when vehicles are moved without their permission or stolen.

Shokunbi explained that tracking technology gives vehicle owners access to location information that could assist them and relevant security agencies in locating missing vehicles.

He illustrated the importance of this capability with an incident involving a client who reportedly went missing during the previous December after going out for a drive.

According to the founder, the client’s friends contacted the company after becoming concerned about his whereabouts.

Shokunbi alleged that police officers had unlawfully detained the client after an unsuccessful attempt to extort him, seized his phones and parked his vehicle away from their station.

After receiving the request for assistance, TrackMyCarNG provided the client’s last recorded coordinates through its tracking application. His friends subsequently used the information to locate him and recover the items allegedly extorted.

Shokunbi described the incident as one of several situations in which the company’s prompt after-sales support had helped customers avoid distress or losses.

Data Privacy, Business Model and Growth Strategy

Given that vehicle-tracking systems collect sensitive information about location and movement patterns, TrackMyCarNG acknowledges the importance of protecting customer information against unauthorised access and misuse.

Shokunbi said the company recognises that vehicle-location information can reveal people’s routines and potentially affect their personal safety. He maintained that access should be restricted to authorised users and that tracking technology must serve legitimate security purposes rather than facilitate privacy violations.

He also acknowledged the responsibilities of vehicle-tracking providers under applicable Nigerian data-protection regulations, including the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

Commercially, the company’s revenue model is primarily built around tracker installation, with additional opportunities for recurring income through tracking-service subscriptions, depending on customers’ packages and platform arrangements.

Its primary markets are individual vehicle owners and businesses operating fleets, particularly logistics companies. To improve accessibility, the company seeks to recommend solutions based on customers’ financial capacities and security requirements rather than adopt a one-size-fits-all approach.

Looking ahead, TrackMyCarNG intends to expand beyond Lagos through corporate partnerships, referrals, digital marketing and improved installation capacity. It also sees opportunities to collaborate with automotive dealers, insurance companies, logistics operators, technology providers and relevant security agencies.

TrackMyCarNG’s Ambitions and Plans for Growth

Over the next three to five years, Shokunbi envisions TrackMyCarNG becoming a leading Nigerian vehicle-security and fleet-monitoring company with operations extending into additional cities across the country.

The company plans to strengthen its installation network, increase its corporate customer base, improve its technology offerings and develop strategic partnerships that can make vehicle-monitoring solutions more accessible.

For businesses, its proposed expansion could provide opportunities to improve fleet visibility, operational accountability and vehicle protection. For individual customers, the ambition is to deliver more dependable tracking services and responsive customer support.

The founder also identified opportunities for investors through corporate contracts, geographical expansion and recurring subscription revenue.

However, achieving these ambitions will require investment, reliable technology infrastructure, strong customer-retention strategies, effective partnerships and consistent service delivery.

Ultimately, Shokunbi wants TrackMyCarNG to be recognised not merely as a company that installs vehicle-tracking devices but as a technology business helping Africans protect valuable assets and businesses manage their transportation operations more effectively.
