Abu Dhabi-based sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Company (Mubadala) has acquired $200 million worth of Equitix’s stake in Greenlink, a major subsea electricity interconnector linking Great Britain and Ireland.

The transaction highlights growing investor confidence in the networks that enable modern energy systems to function efficiently, particularly as renewable energy production expands across Europe.

By investing in Greenlink, Mubadala is positioning itself at the heart of Europe’s evolving electricity market, where cross-border connectivity, grid resilience, and renewable energy integration are becoming increasingly essential.

The acquisition also reflects a broader shift among long-term investors toward infrastructure assets that support economic growth, energy security, and the transition to lower-carbon energy systems.

At the center of the deal is Greenlink, a strategic electricity interconnector jointly owned and operated by Equitix and Baltic Cable. The infrastructure consists of a 504-megawatt high-voltage subsea cable stretching approximately 190 kilometers beneath the sea between Ireland and Great Britain.

While renewable energy projects such as wind farms and solar installations often attract significant attention, experts increasingly recognize that electricity transmission infrastructure is equally important.

Renewable energy sources are not always generated where demand is highest, making efficient transportation systems crucial for balancing electricity supply and demand across regions.

Greenlink addresses this challenge by allowing electricity to move seamlessly between Ireland and Great Britain, helping both countries optimize available energy resources. The project has a nominal capacity capable of supplying electricity to approximately 380,000 homes, making it a significant component of regional energy infrastructure.

According to the company, the interconnector improves grid resilience, increases system flexibility, and enhances market efficiency by facilitating cross-border electricity flows.

It also plays a vital role in supporting the integration of renewable energy sources into national power systems, ensuring that clean energy generated in one market can be utilized where it is needed most.

Mubadala’s Growing Focus on Strategic Infrastructure Assets

The Greenlink acquisition forms part of Mubadala’s broader strategy of investing in infrastructure assets that underpin modern economies. Rather than focusing exclusively on power generation facilities, the sovereign investor is increasingly targeting the networks and systems that enable energy markets to function efficiently.

Commenting on the investment, Karim El Jazzar, Head of Europe and MENA, Infrastructure at Mubadala, emphasized the strategic importance of such assets.

“This investment reflects our continued focus on high-quality infrastructure assets that are integral to the functioning of modern economies, including those enabling more connected and efficient energy systems,” he said.

The transaction follows Mubadala’s recent $325 million investment in Hornsea 3, one of the United Kingdom’s largest offshore wind farm developments operated by Orsted. Together, these investments signal a deliberate effort by the Abu Dhabi fund to strengthen its presence across Europe’s energy infrastructure landscape.

By acquiring stakes in both renewable energy generation and transmission assets, Mubadala is building a diversified portfolio that stands to benefit from Europe’s long-term energy transformation agenda.

Beyond its commercial significance, Greenlink has been recognized for its broader contribution to European energy policy. The project has been designated a Project of Common Interest (PCI) by the European Union, a status reserved for infrastructure considered critical to regional energy integration and security.

The designation reflects Greenlink’s role in strengthening cross-border electricity cooperation while helping Europe create a more interconnected and resilient energy market.

As geopolitical uncertainties, supply disruptions, and rising electricity demand continue to challenge energy systems globally, projects like Greenlink are becoming increasingly valuable.

By enabling electricity to move efficiently between countries, interconnectors help reduce the risk of shortages, improve market stability, and provide greater flexibility during periods of fluctuating renewable energy generation.

The infrastructure also supports Europe’s ambitions to reduce carbon emissions by ensuring that renewable energy can be distributed more effectively across national borders, minimizing waste and improving overall system efficiency.

Looking Ahead: A Growing Opportunity in Europe’s Power Networks

Mubadala’s investment in Greenlink may be indicative of a much larger investment theme unfolding across Europe.

Governments, regulators, and utility companies are expected to continue prioritizing grid upgrades, cross-border electricity links, and network modernization as they seek to enhance energy resilience and support decarbonization efforts.

As renewable energy capacity expands and electricity markets become increasingly interconnected, infrastructure assets that facilitate power transmission are likely to attract growing attention from global investors.

Greenlink stands as an example of how the focus of energy investment is evolving, from simply generating electricity to ensuring it can be delivered efficiently, reliably, and securely across entire regions.

For Mubadala, the acquisition represents more than a stake in an underwater cable. It is a strategic bet on the future architecture of Europe’s energy system and the critical infrastructure that will power the continent’s transition toward a more sustainable and interconnected energy future.
