Co-founded by Dr Isaac Ekundayo and Dr Faridat Musa, the startup grew from the founders’ own experiences as medical students, where they saw firsthand how traditional medical education often remained disconnected from real-world tech innovation.
“The core gap the startup fills is structural,” Ekundayo explained. “Health-tech startups across Africa struggle to access clinicians who understand both healthcare delivery and startup execution.
“At the same time, healthcare students are trained almost exclusively for clinical careers, with minimal exposure to product development, venture building, or innovation workflows.”
By positioning healthcare students as active contributors rather than observers, Medintech Africa ensures that the continent’s health-tech innovations are informed by practical insights from those who understand patient care and clinical realities.
How Medintech Africa Operates and Why It Exists
The Medintech Africa model is multifaceted, combining experiential learning, startup immersion, and mentorship. Students are placed in live health-tech startups where they work on product development, operational support, and data projects.
This hands-on approach is reinforced with venture capital-led mentorship and founder access, ecosystem research, and open datasets that help reduce information gaps across Africa’s digital health landscape.
“Rather than positioning students as observers, we treat them as contributors, building a continuous pipeline of clinician-innovators for the continent,” Ekundayo said.
The startup was conceived with the clear goal of addressing a disconnect, health-tech products often fail because developers lack clinical insight, while healthcare students lack exposure to tech innovation and entrepreneurship.
Medintech Africa acts as ecosystem infrastructure, providing sustained mentorship and structured support that goes beyond traditional hackathons or short-term accelerators.
“Unlike accelerators or hackathons that end at demo day, we provide long-term mentorship beyond events, real startup placements, and phased support that reduces post-hackathon project failure by 90 per cent,” Ekundayo added.
Medintech Africa’s Traction and Milestones So Far
Since its launch in 2023, Medintech Africa has made significant inroads across Africa. With more than 10,000 healthcare students enrolled across 10 countries, the startup has built a robust pipeline of talent for the health-tech sector.
Program assessments show a 70 per cent increase in digital health knowledge among students, while internship satisfaction remains high.
The program’s impact extends beyond immediate startup outcomes. Alumni have gone on to join prestigious pan-African programs and accelerators, further reinforcing Medintech’s role in cultivating durable founder and operator talent.
One founder, whose startup paused in 2024, later joined the MEST AI Startup Programme in Accra, gaining a year-long mentorship alongside leading African founders.
“Even where early ventures paused, alumni have gone on to join highly selective pan-African programmes and accelerators. This reinforces our view that Medintech’s value is not just in company formation, but in producing durable founder and operator talent for the ecosystem,” Ekundayo noted.
Medintech’s Unique Positioning and Market Capacity

Currently, Medintech Africa is an early-stage social enterprise with modest revenue streams. It has raised around US$3,500 in non-dilutive funding, primarily used to pilot programs, run internships, and support ecosystem research.
Revenue streams include program sponsorships, institutional partnerships, talent placement fees, and advisory engagements, but the startup prioritizes proof of model and talent outcomes over short-term profitability.
Ekundayo emphasizes the organic growth of the platform, “Through collaborations with medical student associations, in-person outreach at academic events, and featuring venture-backed founders as mentors, programme participation increased by 85 per cent over successive cohorts.”
Looking ahead, Medintech Africa aims to expand across Rwanda, Kenya, and South Africa, scale internship cohorts from 25 to 50 students. As well as introducing advanced modules such as AI in healthcare, and formalize partnerships with startups, investors, and innovation hubs across the continent.
