PELLER’S RECENT JOB OFFER FOR A CAMERAMAN WITH A MASTER’S DEGREE: A RE-ECHO OF LABOUR MARKETPLACE’S VOICE —BY: IZIAQ OLAWALE
Recently, popular Nigerian TikToker Peller made an announcement in a viral post that he needed a cameraman with a Master’s Degree offering N500k per month working with him.
And 20 young men with a Master’s Degree showed up for the interview.
Immediately I saw his offer, I knew he would never hire any of them. He was chasing clout and using them to trend more.
I have read a couple of submissions and so many comments where people are angry with Peller and blamed the young men who went for the interview to have stooped so low despite having a Master’s Degree.
I thought about this occurrence and a new wave of lessons surfaced on my mind.
This re-echoes what some of us have been preaching: the labour market values skills over certifications.
This perspective isn’t new; it’s been echoed by industry leaders and entrepreneurs who prioritize practical abilities over academic credentials.
The labour market’s shift towards skills-based hiring is driven by the need for:
– Practical expertise: Employers want workers who can deliver tangible results.
– Adaptability: The ability to learn and adapt quickly is crucial in today’s fast-paced work environment.
– Innovation: Skills like problem-solving, leadership, creativity, and critical thinking are highly valued.
The TikToker’s offer might seem provocative, but it underscores a valid point: in many industries, skills and experience trump formal education.
So instead of being angry at Peller, ask yourself: What can I offer the labour market if my certification is stripped off me?
What can I do if my formal qualification isn’t needed? Pause and ponder!
