Nigerian mobility technology startup, Shuttlers, has achieved a major milestone in its decade-long journey to transform urban transportation, announcing its official integration into the Google Maps Transit system in Nigeria while also celebrating the completion of its 10 millionth passenger journey.

The dual achievement marks a significant moment for the company, which has steadily built a technology-enabled shared mobility network serving professionals and businesses across some of Nigeria’s busiest cities.

Through the integration, commuters using Google Maps can now discover Shuttlers’ transit routes while searching for directions and book seats on available routes, making the platform more accessible to thousands of urban travellers.

The development underscores the growing role of digital technology in addressing transportation challenges in African cities, where commuters often contend with unreliable, expensive, and time-consuming travel options.

Founded in 2016, Shuttlers operates across Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, offering shared commute services, corporate employee transportation, vehicle rental solutions, and partnerships with fleet operators.

The company says it has now completed over 10 million journeys, serves more than 11,000 riders daily, and deploys over 430 buses every day, positioning itself as one of the continent’s leading technology-driven mobility platforms.

Google Maps Integration Expands Access to Shared Mobility

At the center of the announcement is Shuttlers’ integration into Google Maps Transit, a move expected to significantly improve visibility and accessibility for commuters seeking reliable transportation options.

With the integration, users searching for public transit directions on Google Maps will be able to view Shuttlers routes alongside other transportation options.

This creates a more seamless journey-planning experience by allowing commuters to discover and access shared transportation directly through a platform they already use daily.

The partnership is particularly significant as Google Maps remains one of the most widely used navigation tools globally.

By becoming part of the Google Transit ecosystem, Shuttlers gains exposure to a broader audience while providing commuters with additional transport alternatives designed around predictability and convenience.

According to the company, the integration is aimed at expanding access to dependable shared transport solutions for professionals and businesses navigating increasingly congested urban centres.

Building the Technology Behind the Milestone

Joining the Google Maps Transit ecosystem required more than a simple partnership agreement. Shuttlers disclosed that it had to align its data architecture, route systems, and real-time operational capabilities with Google’s technical infrastructure requirements.

This meant ensuring that route information, schedules, and operational data could be accurately shared and updated within Google’s transit network, enabling users to access dependable travel information when planning their journeys.

The achievement highlights the growing sophistication of African technology startups, many of which are increasingly building solutions that meet global standards while addressing local challenges.

Commenting on the development, Shuttlers Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder, Damilola Olokesusi, described the integration as the culmination of years of effort aimed at improving the commuting experience for millions of people.

“We are incredibly proud of our integration into the Google Maps Transit system. This, alongside hitting 10 million journeys since launch, is a reflection of years of hard work,” Olokesusi said.

She noted that transportation remains a daily challenge for many urban workers and businesses, adding that the company’s mission has been to make mobility more dependable.

“For millions of professionals, commuting is still unpredictable, exhausting and expensive. We have spent the last 10 years building technology and operational infrastructure that makes daily transportation more dependable, for commuters, businesses that employ them, and the fleet operators who power our network,” she added.

A Decade of Growth in Nigeria’s Mobility Sector

The announcement also serves as a reflection of Shuttlers’ growth since its establishment nearly a decade ago.

What began as a solution to urban commuting challenges has evolved into a large-scale transportation network connecting thousands of professionals with reliable daily transport.

Over the years, the company has expanded its services beyond shared commuting to include corporate transportation, vehicle rental offerings, and collaborations with fleet operators.

The completion of 10 million journeys demonstrates both the scale of its operations and the increasing demand for organised, technology-enabled transportation services in Nigeria’s urban centres.

With more than 11,000 daily riders and a fleet network exceeding 430 buses, Shuttlers has become an important player in efforts to modernise mobility across Africa’s rapidly growing cities.

Google Highlights Importance of Reliable Transit Information

Google also welcomed the partnership, emphasizing the importance of accurate and accessible transportation information in helping people navigate cities more efficiently.

Olumide Balogun, Director for West Africa at Google, said the company was pleased to welcome Shuttlers into its transit ecosystem in Nigeria.

“Reliable transit information helps people navigate cities more confidently and efficiently. As more Nigerians adopt digital tools for everyday mobility, integrations like these help make trusted transportation easier to discover and access,” Balogun said.

His remarks reflect the broader trend of digital transformation within the transportation sector, where technology platforms are increasingly being used to connect commuters with reliable travel options while improving the overall mobility experience.

Why this Development Matters

The integration represents more than a technological upgrade for Shuttlers. It signals a growing recognition of African mobility startups as critical contributors to solving transportation challenges in densely populated cities.

For commuters, the development means easier access to trusted transport options through a familiar platform. For businesses, it offers another avenue to support employee mobility and productivity.

For the broader technology ecosystem, it demonstrates how locally developed solutions can achieve the operational standards required to integrate with global platforms such as Google.

As cities across Africa continue to expand and transportation demands increase, partnerships between technology providers and mobility operators are likely to play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of urban movement.

For Shuttlers, the milestone of 10 million journeys and its entry into the Google Maps Transit ecosystem may represent not only a celebration of past achievements but also a foundation for its next phase of growth.
