South African fintech startup, Moment, has raised US$22 million in a Series A funding round as it seeks to strengthen its payment infrastructure and expand its revenue collection solutions across Africa.

The funding, led by AlphaCode Venture Partners, with continued backing from General Catalyst and MultiChoice and fresh investment from Canal+, will enable Moment to deepen its payment network, enhance its technology and accelerate continental expansion.

The company provides businesses, particularly large enterprises such as insurers and subscription platforms, with tools designed to simplify recurring payments, recover failed transactions and improve customer payment engagement across digital and physical channels.

The investment comes as African businesses continue to navigate fragmented payment ecosystems, a challenge AlphaCode described as a “hidden tax on commerce” affecting businesses and households participating in the digital economy.

Moment Targets Africa’s Complex Payment Landscape

At the heart of Moment’s business is an attempt to address the complexity surrounding payment collection across African markets.

Businesses operating across the continent often have to navigate different payment channels, financial institutions, currencies, customer behaviours and regulatory environments, making it difficult to build efficient systems for collecting money at scale.

Moment is positioning its platform as a technology layer capable of helping enterprises manage these challenges through a unified suite of payment collection and revenue retention tools.

Its services include recurring payment collection, customer outreach and failed-payment recovery, allowing businesses to pursue revenue that might otherwise be lost because of unsuccessful transactions.

AlphaCode Venture Partners general partner Dominique Collett described the challenge as “a hidden tax on commerce” affecting businesses attempting to grow across Africa.

Moment’s strategy therefore goes beyond simply processing payments, focusing instead on helping enterprises collect and retain more of the revenue they are already owed.

Payment Collection and Revenue Recovery at the Core

Moment’s platform is designed particularly for billers and enterprises that depend on customers making regular payments.

This includes businesses such as insurance companies and subscription-based platforms, where a failed transaction can translate into lost or delayed revenue.

Through its recurring-payment capabilities, Moment can help businesses automate the collection of regular customer payments rather than relying entirely on customers to initiate transactions themselves.

Its failed-payment recovery tools are equally important because transactions can fail for several reasons, including expired payment details, insufficient funds or technical problems.

Rather than treating a failed transaction as lost revenue, Moment gives businesses tools to engage customers and recover outstanding payments across digital and in-person channels.

The company also provides customer outreach capabilities, enabling businesses to communicate with customers about payment obligations and failed transactions.

By combining collection, communication and recovery, Moment is positioning itself as more than a conventional payment processor.

Connecting Enterprise Billing Systems to Payment Networks

Another major component of Moment’s proposition is its ability to connect directly with the billing systems already used by large enterprises.

Instead of forcing businesses to completely replace their existing infrastructure, the platform can be integrated with enterprise billing systems, allowing payment-related processes to operate alongside the systems businesses already depend on.

This is particularly relevant for large companies managing substantial customer bases and complex billing operations, where changing core technology infrastructure can be costly and disruptive.

Moment’s approach is intended to make payment collection more seamless by connecting billing information with payment and recovery capabilities. The company says its suite gives merchants access to collection tools spanning recurring payments, customer outreach and failed-payment recovery.

Such integration could also help enterprises obtain greater visibility into payment performance and reduce the operational burden associated with managing multiple collection processes.

This positions Moment as an infrastructure provider operating behind the scenes of large businesses rather than simply another consumer-facing payment application.

$22 Million Funding to Drive Continental Expansion

Moment plans to deploy the new US$22 million Series A capital toward expanding its network, improving its platform and accelerating its presence across African markets.

The round was led by AlphaCode Venture Partners, while General Catalyst and MultiChoice continued their backing and Canal+ joined as a new investor.

The investment signals growing confidence in Moment’s ambition to address a structural challenge within Africa’s financial ecosystem.

AlphaCode’s Collett said the company was “dismantling that barrier” of payment complexity “at continental scale” and highlighted the fact that Moment’s product has already been validated by large enterprises.

The funding could therefore mark an important transition for the company, moving it from strengthening its existing operations toward broader African expansion.

Its larger ambition is to become a significant piece of the continent’s financial infrastructure by helping businesses collect payments more efficiently, recover revenue lost through failed transactions and navigate Africa’s fragmented payment environment with greater ease.
