Moreover, misinformation spreads rapidly when algorithms prioritize sensationalism over credibility. With Nigeria’s youthful population heavily reliant on social media for news and community, unchecked algorithmic influence could have profound consequences.
“The challenge is twofold,” explains Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission. “We need platforms to localize their AI systems responsibly while also empowering our citizens to navigate the digital space critically.”
Reclaiming Your Digital Experience
Despite the complex technology behind recommendations, everyday users aren’t powerless. Social platforms now offer several tools to influence what you see:
- Adjust Preferences: Many apps allow you to “hide” posts you dislike or mark topics as “not interested.”
- Clear Watch History: Resetting your viewing history helps disrupt entrenched algorithmic patterns.
- Follow Chronological Feeds: Platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram let users toggle between algorithmic and latest-post timelines.
- Limit Time Spent: Setting app time limits helps break addictive scrolling loops.
Harris urges users to remember that “the algorithm serves you, not the other way around. But you have to teach it who you want to be.”
As debates around AI intensify, regulators worldwide are considering stricter rules on algorithmic transparency and user choice. In Europe, the Digital Services Act now mandates major platforms to explain how recommendation systems work and offer alternatives.
In Nigeria and across Africa, however, regulatory frameworks for AI remain in early stages. Local tech experts argue this must change quickly to protect digital sovereignty and foster innovation tailored to African contexts.
