A Ugandan education technology startup, School Monitor Technologies (SMT), is expanding its efforts to transform school administration across Africa.
The startup is using a cloud-based management platform designed to digitise essential school operations, from student records and academic reporting to financial management and parent communication.
Founded in 2022, the startup has deployed its solution in approximately 150 schools across Uganda, serving more than 30,000 users.
Having recently secured a $10,000 grant from the Standard Chartered Foundation’s Women in Tech Accelerator, the company has launched an upgraded version of its platform and is preparing to expand into South Sudan, Tanzania, Malawi and other African markets facing similar educational administration challenges.
What Exactly is School Monitor Technologies?
School Monitor Technologies is a Ugandan education technology company founded in 2022 by Annet Nuwayo and Vincent Matsiko to simplify school administration through digital technology.
Its flagship product is a cloud-based school management platform that brings several administrative and academic functions into one system.
The platform enables schools to manage student records, examination results, report cards, staff attendance, leave applications, school fees, accounting, inventory, library operations and communication with parents.
The company’s approach is strongly influenced by Nuwayo’s experience as a trained teacher, which gave her firsthand knowledge of the administrative difficulties confronting educational institutions.
Explaining the motivation behind the solution, she said:
“From my experience, I understand how schools actually function, where the pressure points are, and what schools genuinely need from a digital tool.”
The Pain Point in School Monitor Technologies’ Focus
School Monitor is addressing the widespread dependence on paper-based administrative processes among educational institutions in Uganda and other African markets.
According to Nuwayo, Uganda has more than 30,000 primary schools, secondary schools and other educational institutions, with the overwhelming majority still relying on manual record-keeping.
Schools routinely document fee payments in handwritten ledgers, prepare students’ report cards manually and maintain academic and administrative records in physical files, creating additional workloads for teachers and administrators.
Nuwayo explained that school owners managing multiple campuses also struggle to monitor operations remotely, while parents often lack reliable channels to track their children’s academic performance and outstanding fees.
These challenges create inefficiencies, limit access to timely information and make effective school administration more difficult.
What Makes School Monitor Technologies Unique
Beyond digitising conventional school administration, School Monitor distinguishes itself through its integrated accounting capabilities, accessible parent communication features and role-based access controls.
Its financial management module enables schools to monitor revenue, expenditure, budgets and payroll while generating real-time financial reports, including trial balances, balance sheets and profit-and-loss statements.
Nuwayo explained that the platform also accommodates parents who may not own smartphones by using SMS to deliver important school information.
This allows parents with basic mobile phones to receive updates without depending on internet access or smartphone applications.
Additionally, role-based access ensures that head teachers, bursars, teachers and parents can only view information relevant to their respective responsibilities, strengthening data protection and improving administrative efficiency.
Supports for Product Development and School Monitor Version 2
Although School Monitor has largely financed its operations through bootstrapping and revenue generated from customer subscriptions, the company recently secured a $10,000 catalytic grant from the Standard Chartered Foundation’s Women in Tech Accelerator.
The programme was implemented in Uganda by Innovation Village, with support from Village Capital.
According to Nuwayo, the funding provided essential working capital when cash flow constraints were limiting the company’s growth. It was channelled directly into developing School Monitor Version 2, which has since been launched.
The upgraded platform features enhanced management modules, WhatsApp integration, improved financial reporting capabilities and a redesigned interface.
Nuwayo described the release as the company’s most significant product investment so far, adding that it had already contributed to new school enrolments.
She also highlighted the mentorship and structured learning opportunities provided by the accelerator.
SMT’s Milestone and Expansion Plans
School Monitor Technologies currently serves approximately 150 schools across Uganda, with more than 30,000 users on its platform. The company also reports growing interest from additional schools preparing to adopt the solution.
According to Nuwayo, the platform saves schools an average of 40 hours per academic term in manual report-card processing alone, offering a measurable improvement in administrative efficiency.
She also noted that customer retention has remained strong because the platform addresses everyday operational challenges rather than serving as a technology product adopted merely for novelty.
Its SMS-based delivery of academic results has been particularly well received by parents.
Building on its growing adoption in Uganda, the startup is now targeting regional expansion, with South Sudan identified as a near-term market, alongside Tanzania, Malawi and other East and Central African countries.
These markets present opportunities because of their continued reliance on paper-based school administration, the need for software adapted to local curricula and the growing demand for affordable digital infrastructure among private educational institutions.
