OpenAI has launched free AI image creation on WhatsApp. The update allows users to generate images directly from their chats using simple text prompts, with no design skills or additional apps required.
The rollout marks the first time WhatsApp users worldwide can create AI-generated visuals directly from their chat, free of charge.
Company’s Statement: The rollout was confirmed by OpenAI on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, June 16, 2025.
“ChatGPT image generation is now available in WhatsApp via 1-800-ChatGPT. Now available to everyone,” the company said.
“Don’t forget to link your ChatGPT account to 1-800-ChatGPT in WhatsApp to get more image generations,” a follow-up post further advised users.
According to industry experts, the latest update, which was previously available only on ChatGPT’s web and mobile platforms enables access to DALL·E, OpenAI’s powerful text-to-image model, from within WhatsApp chats.
Users can generate completely new visuals or edit uploaded images with just a few lines of instruction.
How to Use ChatGPT’s Image Generator on WhatsApp
Take for instance you’re illustrating imaginative scenes like “a cat DJing at a festival” or enhancing user-uploaded photos into different art styles, ChatGPT can now produce original visuals for you.
Getting started with the new tool is fast and easy. Here’s what users need to do:
- Save the Official Number: Add +1-800-ChatGPT (+1-800-242-8478) to your phone’s contact list.
- Open WhatsApp and Say Hello: Send a simple “Hi” to initiate a conversation. The system will prompt you to begin setup.
- Verify Your OpenAI Account: Follow the authentication steps to securely log in and link your OpenAI account to WhatsApp.
- Start Creating: Once verified, you can begin sending prompts like “create a painting of a mountain at sunrise” or “design a logo for a vintage bookshop.” The AI responds with custom-made images generated by DALL·E.
- Edit Your Own Photos: Users can also upload images and provide text-based editing instructions—turning a selfie into a cartoon, applying new backgrounds, or altering style and tone.
