Mawingu Networks, a Kenyan-based internet service provider, is transforming rural internet access across underserved and unserved communities. Founded in 2013, the company aims to bridge the digital divide by connecting institutions and households that lack reliable internet. Its innovative approach focuses on providing affordable and sustainable connectivity solutions in areas that need it most.
The company employs solar-powered radio towers and battery storage systems to deliver internet services. These towers, combined with rooftop aerials and Wi-Fi routers, enable “last-mile” connections for homes, businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities. Its latest starter package, Mawingu Max 8, offers speeds of 8Mbps for just KES 1,950 per month. So far, Mawingu has reached over 48,700 people across 28 counties in Kenya.
Today, Mawingu announced a major milestone, securing KSh 1.9 billion (US$15 million) in funding to expand its operations into Tanzania through the acquisition of local internet provider Habari. This follows an earlier funding round in 2022 that raised US$9 million to expand its Kenyan operations.
With this expansion, Mawingu plans to scale its services to benefit 83,000 households and 1,200 businesses in rural Kenya and Tanzania. The fixed wireless connections will improve access to education, healthcare, and business opportunities, further driving development in these regions. The acquisition highlights the company’s commitment to fostering regional connectivity and innovation.
Mawingu shared the news on Twitter, stating: “Starting today, Mawingu kicks off its expansion journey into East Africa with the acquisition of Tanzanian Internet Service Provider (ISP) @HabariNode and the receipt of KSh 1.9 Billion (US$ 15 Million) in investment capital!”
