Fast-growing Nigerian-founded edtech startup, Lingawa, formerly known as Topset, is a digital language academy that offers users access to various language classes.
Founded in 2022 by Frank Williams, the startup initially focused on academic tutoring where students are matched to teachers according to their needs.
According to media sources, the startup has since pivoted to a larger cultural mission in its vision to preserve African languages including Yoruba and Igbo through digital education.
Bridging the Language Gap
Lingawa caters to both the African diaspora and learners on the continent, offering language lessons delivered by native-speaking tutors.
The platform enhances the learning experience with digital tools such as flashcards, immersive games, and virtual immersion sessions aimed at helping students achieve fluency.
To date, the platform has served more than 3,000 students, primarily from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. With 100 native-speaking tutors, Lingawa offers language instruction at an affordable rate of $10 per hour.
Significant Backing
The company has raised $1.1 million in pre-seed funding to expand its mission of preserving and teaching indigenous African languages.
The round was led by prominent investors, including Voltron Capital, the MasterCard Foundation, and Zrosk.
This funding, according to the startup, will enable it to expand its offerings and reach a larger audience.
Ambitious Plans for Growth
Looking ahead, Lingawa plans to introduce additional languages, including Zulu, Arabic, and Swahili, by the first quarter of 2025.
The company is also developing a gamified app to provide a more affordable and engaging learning experience for users who may not be able to commit to regular subscriptions.
With its recent funding and ambitious plans, Lingawa is getting set to become a key player in the preservation and promotion of Africa’s rich linguistic heritage.
