The recent ban on mining as well as cryptocurrency activities in the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State, has received mixed reactions from Nigerians.
The management of the hospital in a circular dated 18 September, 2024 and signed by the Deputy Director of Administration, Adamu Usman Tela, has directed all members of staff to desist from mining and cryptocurrency activities.
The directive, according to him, followed series of complaints from patients and relatives who described the activities as distraction.
“The circular reads in part, “The Management has already deployed SERVICOM, ACTU and Security Officers around to monitor and ensure compliance with the directives.”
Mining activities have recently become a fad in Nigeria with score of youth, including wage earners, engage in several tap-swapping activities in search for dollar returns.
Reacting to the development on X, several netizens have lauded the decision while others faulted it.
One netizen by the name of Daniel Preiz described the development as a misplaced priority.
“Setting priority right is quite difficult for some people. How does that affect productivity.”
Another by the name of Emirati noted that the directive was reflective of the level of unseriousness in the country.
He said, “Meaning, cuz is not even correlating. Is crypto hindering services in the hospital.We just took unserious in this country.”
Kingsleye stated: “They want to ban telegram but I swear I’ll die protesting for it.”
However, several others described the decision as necessary and in line with the ethics of the profession.
“You can’t be mining while on duty”, A netizen by the name of The Resilient Collective noted.
Owolabi also said: “U can imagine any health practitioner taking HX from you and mining which is unethical.”
