The suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has been taken into custody, according to US President Donald Trump. Trump announced the arrest on September 12, stating “with a high degree of certainty” that the alleged gunman is in custody.
The arrest comes after a multi-day manhunt following the September 10 attack at Utah Valley University, where Kirk was shot and killed while addressing students.
Image and Video Footage
Authorities released images and video footage of the suspect, which led to a breakthrough in the case. Trump revealed that a minister and the suspect’s father played a role in capturing the alleged gunman, saying “someone very close to him turned him in”.
Tyler Robinson?
The suspect’s identity has not been officially confirmed, but reports suggest 22-year-old Tyler Robinson may be the individual in custody. Law enforcement officials have not publicly confirmed the detention, but a news conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. ET to provide further updates.
Kirk, 31, was the founder of Turning Point USA, a nonprofit political organization. His death has sparked widespread outrage and condolences from across the political spectrum.
Charlie Kirk as a fine person
Trump described Kirk as “the finest person” and expressed hope that the suspect would receive the death penalty.
Investigation and Evidence
The FBI recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle near the scene, believed to be the murder weapon. Palm prints, shoe impressions, and potential DNA evidence were also found on the rooftop where the gunman fired the fatal shot.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities urging the public to come forward with information to help track down any potential accomplices or motives behind the attack.
